Douglass spent the first part of his life in ignorance. However, his life of a seemingly endless servitude and ignorance was completely shattered by the fact that he learned to read. Once he learned to read, his life was forever changed. Douglass escaped slavery and tyranny and for this became an icon even to this day. His story more than adequately demonstrates that a quality education is perhaps the most important thing a person can receive in their life. Without his education, he would not have realized the shame and inadequacy of his slavery. The unfortunate acceptance of his slavery held him in. At least he would have had the chance to choose his fate whereas in slavery, he was but a machine to be disposed of at the masters will.1 Frieberg 2 In the present, however, it is so overly obvious that our education system is quickly becoming inadequate (if it is not already). Obviously, we cannot let it slip deeper and deeper into the abyss, but what can we do to fix it? Should we throw more money at it? Should we create more watchdog groups, or set up more committees to hash out what we should do? It is my contention that none of those things we continue to do are going to work. I do not believe there is anything we can do, on a governmental basis, to fix the problem or stave off the descent. Changing the system from within is not going to work. The key is to change it from without (Sarason 4). Of course, it is easy to talk about social change as a means to education reform, but talk is always more desirable than action. It is a given that broad strokes of social reform take years and years. To be honest we do not have that time. We need to make these changes now. The problems with education are, quite obviously, numerous, and it is a well-known fact that we cannot simply fix education. We must first point out specific problems. The first problem is the enormous difference in Frieberg 3 scholastic success between races and cultures. In many instances, schools have chosen to take on this responsibility when they are in fact incapable of effectively relieving the problem. The schools have chosen revisionist history and picking and choosing which subjects should be included in curriculums. However, since the schools are so heavily influenced by the communities and societies that surround them, they are eventually rendered unable to make any sort of difference at all (Ravitch 337). Some interest groups are more interested in preserving their values as opposed to maintaining an exceptional education (Christian fundamentalists, for instance). They control some communities and can completely destroy any opportunity for a young mind to learn. The politics of racial injustice are, hopefully, completely gone. But were still living through a state where the races feel as though the barriers are still there. Of course, from my perspective (the perceived subjugator), it is easy to claim that the politics are not there. From the perspective of those who believe they are being subjugated, it is even easier to see that the Frieberg 4 Politics are there. They cannot only see it, but they can, more importantly, feel it. The second problem, and possibly the most important, is a question of interest. Are American schools really conducive to learning in a stimulating way? Pubescent students are almost incapable of true learning because a hormonal fog, for an enormous part of their lives, clouds their minds. They walk around the schools nearly humming and buzzing with new and exciting thoughts they are just beginning to understand. Once those hormones have calmed and the student feels they can control them a little, there is still no difference in the way they are taught. Nearly every school is the same (Wood 9). The eight stages he identified corresponds adequately to the major life stages that each of us pass through; infancy (birth to 18 months), early childhood (18 months to 3 years), play age (3 to 5 years), school age (6 to 12 years), adolescence (12 to 18 years), young adulthood (18 to 35 years), middle adulthood (35 to 65 years) and late adulthood (65 to death) (Boyd Bee, 2006). Erikson’s major contribution is in the virtues that a person must gain in each stage as a developmental task that would enable the person to succeed in the succeeding stages (Boyd Bee, 2006). The theory describes very real situations that each person experiences one way or another within his/her lifetime.The underlying motivation for a person’s behavior in a given stage is based on his/her need to resolve the developmental issues of that particular stage, thu s an old man who is always grumpy and unhappy and difficult may have not been able to accomplish his goals and dreams and hence he behaves in that way. Another example is when an adolescent striving to form her own identity experiments and try out different things in order for her to determine who she is and what she wants to be, thus explaining risk taking behavior prevalent in adolescence. The strength of the theory is that it is a common sense approach to the study of human development. It is a reality that life progresses in a series of stages, and as a person grows older, his/her interests and goals also change, if the young adult was consumed with wealth, power and prestige, then late adult is more focused on relationships, friendships, spirituality and others. Erikson’s theory is based on what is normal, what is expected of each person at a given stage, and what should a person achieve in order to become successful.The criticisms of the theory center on its inability t o explain those who deviate from the stages, for example, the mid lifer who have remained unattached, single and without children who is successful and happy, another example is the couple who have married early in their teens and by 35 is already in the empty nest period. The theory’s weakness also lies in the emphasis it gave on the need to resolve the developmental tasks in a given stage in order to be successful in the next (Newman Newman, 1999), there are cases when someone chooses to be single all their life, does it mean they would be unhappy because they are not married, or the young adult who decides not to have children and focus on her career not be as fulfilled as those who had children? Lastly, the theory is based on the social norms and expectations of American life, in fact when inspected closely, the theory mirrors the American dream perpetuated in the 1960’s. it is not culturally sensitive, it does not account for variations within a society nor is it applicable to the more fast paced and complex society of today, how can the theory live up to the fact that more and more people are delaying marriage and parenthood, or that the elderly still have their careers and actively living their lives.Nonetheless, Erikson’s theory of development (1950) offers a basic explanation of the human life-span and the characteristics for its stage, he was able to identify the most salient factors in each stage, the most relevant theme for each developmental milestone and also offers a complete stage theory from birth to death which very few theories have been able to do.

I Love School Essay

Sixteen years after a sixteen-year-old wrote this book, Francis Ford Coppola turned this novel into a movie. The book is a coming-of-age novel, but the movie focuses on the characters’ loss of innocence. The movie follows the story line very closely. The reader is only told that this story takes place in the southwest, but the movie places it in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the year 1966. It also changes the conflict from the East Side versus the West side to the northside versus the southside. This minor directional change was probably made due to the relative time proximity to the musical West Side Story, which won the best picture Academy Award in l961. However, as with all movies, character insight that is critical to understanding the story is lost when the format goes from the written word to the screen. Ponyboy is telling us the story, the same as in the book, but the 91-minute film only glosses over many character relationships. With the exception of Ponyboy, the viewer misses out on knowing most of the novel’s characters. Darry and Soda are relatively minor characters in the movie, and the viewer is given little insight into their lives. The same is true for the rest of the gang, even Dally. Dally’s death loses much of its impact because viewers aren’t able to get to know him. Only the reader is aware of the fact that Dally’s gun is unloaded, and the symbolic death of Dally in the spotlight is gone. Johnny’s character is also weaker in the movie than the book. Viewers don’t see the growth in his character, because they don’t know Johnny. Johnny’s appreciation for life at the end of his own is barely noted, but it has great impact on Pony in the novel.
